Marketing Communications/PR Intern

Tipping Point Communications is seeking proactive and ownership thinking rising juniors and seniors for internship positions. Applicants will grow their marketing communication expertise while understanding an agency setting. To qualify, candidates must be able to receive college credit for the Fall 2021 term.

Job Summary

Your main role will be to support the account management team with research, reporting and content writing for a wide variety of projects, including working on pro-bono projects such as Willow Domestic Violence Center, Lollypop Farm, Champion Academy and Habitat Buffalo. Additionally, interns will have an opportunity to learn and become proficient with project management software and marketing data analytics tools while getting hands-on experience across the marketing mix (paid, earned, owned, and shared) as well as building client service skills.

General Responsibility

  • Regularly attend internal meetings: weekly all-staff huddles, account management team check-ins, and all-staff agency meetings.
  • Create weekly industry insights report that keeps the account management team up to date on important news and topics related to client work.
  • Take detailed notes in meetings for the account team.
  • Own one significant project that helps the organization grow, boost strategic thinking, become more effective, or streamline workflow (to be defined with VP at internship start).
  • Write at least one blog post about your experience for posting to Tipping Point’s website and social channels.
  • Present a portfolio of your completed works during the internship to the agency.
  • Support the planning and implementation of the Agency’s 15-year anniversary party in September.

Marketing Research  and Planning

  • Learn how to use industry research and planning tools  like Cision, Constant Contact, Scarborough, that are critical to the development of communications plans, comprehensive media lists building, content scheduling/monitoring/reporting, coverage reporting and understanding consumer media consumption habits.
  • Attend trainings with the account management team, as they happen/are scheduled to take place.
  • Sit in on client workshops to learn how the agency gathers insights to prepare long-term strategic marketing plans.

Public Relations

  • Build media relations skills through support of  the Agency’s pro-bono accounts including Willow Domestic Violence Center and Champion Academy. Interns will attend client meetings, develop comprehensive campaigns, and execute tactics with guidance and support from the account management team.
  • Learn the art of developing traditional media materials like press releases, media alerts, media kits, pitches, bi-lines, etc. and when/where/how to use them to earn media coverage.
  • Cultivate a network of journalists, influencers, editors, PR professionals, and contributors.

Social Media

  • Work with the account management team to develop organic social media content calendars for Tipping Point across various platforms, ensuring strategies align with and support marketing goals and brand voice with strategic guidance from agency leadership.
  • Research, prepare and present insights on social media landscape, new strategies and tactics during standing bi-weekly account management team meetings.
  • Write blog posts, create social media content, monitor social platforms, graphic projects using Adobe Creative Suite, etc.


This unpaid internship position is appropriate for college juniors and seniors with majors focused on public relations, communications, business administration, and or marketing. To qualify, candidates must be able to receive college credit.


  • Copy writing: Proof-reading in AP style and a creative flair for engaging copy.
  • Presentation: From communicating ideas to the team to presenting stories to journalists, information needs to be organized in an interesting way to capture their attention.
  • Interpersonal: Whether it’s over the phone, by email or in person, this individual needs to be approachable, friendly, empathetic, and able to relate to people on different levels within the agency, with clients and with the media.
  • Time Management: Time management is crucial when meeting the demands and pressures of the team and clients, so this hire needs to be able to work quickly and efficiently, without compromising on quality.
  • Resilience: You need to be confident to pick up the phone to national journalists and resilient enough to handle criticism and rejection.
  • Math: ability to perform basic math; understanding of basic accounting concepts (P&L, etc.).

How Success is Measured

Interns will set professional development goals with the vice president within the first week of the internship, that will be tracked during weekly meetings. Additionally, brief daily check-ins will serve to assess and determine priorities and workload.
